This is a map of the range of all giraffe species. By my count that puts them in just 16 countries out of the 54 in Africa (of which 5 are island countries with no territory on the continental mainland). That’s 30%, quite a long way shy of all, and as you can see many of those countries that do have giraffes only have a tiny portion of their territory within giraffes’ habitats

Wow, I knew they weren’t in “every African country”, but I didn’t realize just how restricted their range was

Good teachers don’t mind saying “I don’t know” or that they need to look it up and will get back to you.

Not only that but giraffes in different areas have different patterns and it’s so cool

in addition to the fact that people just have different natural rhythms, a big reason why we can’t seem to go to bed as early as we “should” is that nighttime is, for many of us, our safest and most fulfilling time of day. we don’t have to work, we won’t be contacted by bosses or insurance companies or collection agencies or other suffocating life business… we’re likely only to be contacted by our friends, or by no one at all. night time is release; it’s ours. we can rest or recreate. we can do things we actually want to do. who would choose to cut that short?? just to usher in the next morning when our lives are not our own again? nighttime is precious and nothing could be more normal than the desire to embrace this

So, y’all remember that post that said animals in urban areas slowly became nocturnal to avoid encounters with humans? Apparently that includes humans.

I think it’d be pretty funny if the next time an adult tells me I’m being Rude And Disrespectful™ I just went “ya it’s because I don’t respect you” and watch the gates of hell open before me

Telling a boomer they’re not automatically entitled to my respect just to feel something

in light of this news, I do wanna say this for anyone who needs it: staying informed/in the loop and doomscrolling are two different things, and it’s important for your mental health to know what that difference is for you.

it’s essential now more than ever to make sure that we’re in the loop with current events and politics. this post is absolutely not advocating for ignoring the news, especially considering factors such as privilege. if you’re able to, please do try to stay informed. but there comes a point where information can become too much (particularly when you belong to a marginalized group), causing stress, anxiety, and burnout. being an informed citizen shouldn’t come at the expense of your wellbeing.

right now, please ask yourself: am I checking the news to stay up to date, or am I checking it because I’m scared? am I following current events to enhance my understanding, or am I following it because I’m too anxious to tear away?

if you feel rising panic, dread, and anxiety that’s spiraling, it’s time to step back. being an informed citizen doesn’t mean agonizing over things you can’t control. when that happens, it’s time to reign yourself back in.

consider this post a checkpoint, especially if you’re an American, black/a person of color, a marginalized identity (be it religious, gender/sexuality, or disability), or any combination thereof. it’s alright to step back and care for yourself.

allow yourself room to breathe. it’ll be okay. you’ll be able to step back in when you’re ready.

World leaders read +/-5 individual newspapers for +/-2–3 hours every day. If you’re reading more than that

that’s too much.
